How marginal rates work

Your marginal tax rate is the rate applied to your last dollar of taxable income, not the rate on your entire income. Because the U.S. uses a progressive bracket system, your first dollars are taxed at lower rates and only the income in your top bracket is taxed at the marginal rate. Your effective rate — total tax divided by total income — is always lower than your marginal rate.

This tool uses the same IRS bracket data as the Federal Tax Calculator. For a full tax estimate including deductions and credits, use the calculator instead.
